LOST

Digital Screenshot, 24k Gold Leaf

2020-2023

In 2021, during and after the global pandemic, I created a lot of digital art. Works on Photoshop, Illustrator, and the application Procreate. These works were all stored on my school's Google Drive. During a glitch in the system, as I turned from Junior to senior, my drive was reset. Every work that I so carefully made was lost. Today, all that is left is this gap in my portfolio from this time period, as well as an error message when trying to open the drive.

This work is a representation of all the hours spent and work created from this time period that has been banished deep into the web and lost without a trace. Framed in a vintage, extravagant frame, I had leafed in 24k gold, with inspiration drawn from Banskey's framed girl with a balloon. It is a play on what can be considered a masterpiece and, in turn, what deserves a golden frame. This serves as a reminder to back up your work.

Inspired by Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain," this cyanotype light exposure print is of a used broken toilet with its own unknown history that I had found on the side of the road. I meticulously carried it one mile and reassembled it In a selected location deep into the forest. This photo was taken on my iPhone, then rendered into a photo negative, and developed on watercolor paper using ultraviolet light, leaving the burned image of a toilet in the into the paper.

This photo shows a door inside Frank Elementary School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The abbreviation ALICE is written on the door. Students are taught to ALERT, LOCKDOWN, INFORM, COUNTER, AND ESCAPE. The Classroom door is also equipped with an orange wedge that can be placed to prevent the door from being opened and a rope to tie around the doorknob. The Fortification of classrooms is a reality in the United States and speaks volumes.

This work is just as important as its frame. Exploring shadows and playing with depth of field, this collage seems to float off the wall, frozen in time. Inspired by the work of Barbara Kruger for the use of clear printed words, "NOT BROKE" is made to stir discussions around wealth and possession.

ANXIETY

Acrylic Painting, Alcohol Marker

Made in the early days of the global pandemic and quarantine, "ANXIETY" depicts just that. It provides physical documentation of a mental feeling. On an imperfect white canvas, dark scribbles fill the majority, leaving only bits and pieces of the background to shine through.

Dawned in an imperfect mat, casting a shadow onto the collage, OPENs draws the viewer in as a figure in a suit stands in front of vintage televisions. With inspiration drawn from notes that people use for ransom, featuring magazine clippings, OPENs Stirs ideas behind commercialism.

Made on a stretched canvas painted with various layers of pastel, oil, acrylic, paint, alcohol-based marker, and aerosol paint, it tries to replicate the aged surfaces covered in tags, subways, and public spaces that street artists and graffiti artists use as their canvas. This art is on a stretched canvas, which maintains the appearance of actual street art, but it is not real street art because it doesn't appear on a street. It raises commentary around what can be considered art, the location of said art, and whether or not it is permissible. Works to help one think about questions of legality and vandalism. Does this work, not being on the street, change its context? Is it still beautiful now that it is allowed? Or is the feeling behind the art now rendered purposeless, that it is made on a legal surface with permission and not found in an urban area outside?
